This niche is a symbolic representation of the Garden of Eden, in which the two trees stand for Adam and Eve. The three-dimensional grid is established in cubits, the Biblical dimension measured from the elbow to the tip of the extended fingers, which is approximately a half meter and is oriented to the West Wall of the Temple in Jerusalem. Man’s original home is thus conceptually measured.
The top portion of the grid is irregular, as the modules are interrupted by the extending branches of the trees as they grow up and out of the niche. While the grid appears to imprison the trees, the trees actually determine the grid. Nature preserves while man’s attempts to establish order in the universe will not endure.
